A comparative study of marine litter on the seafloor of coastal areas in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas ArchiMer
Ioakeimidis, C.; Zeri, C.; Kaberi, H.; Galatchi, M.; Antoniadis, K.; Streftaris, N.; Galgani, Francois; Papathanassiou, E.; Papatheodorou, G..
In the present work, abundance, spatial distribution and qualitative composition, of benthic marine litter, were investigated in five study areas from the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas (Saronikos, Patras and Echinades Gulfs; Limassol Gulf; Constanta Bay). Surveys were performed using the monitoring protocol proposed by the Technical Group for Marine Litter. Densities ranged from 24 items/km(2) to 1211 items/km(2), with the Saronikos Gulf being the most affected area. Plastics were predominant in all study areas ranging from 45.2% to 95%. Metals and Glass/Ceramics reached maximum values of 21.9% and of 22.4%. The size distribution of litter items showed that >= 50% fall into medium size categories (10 x 10 cm, 20 x 20 cm) along with an elevated...

A multibiomarker approach on the Atlantic tomcod (Microgadus tomcod) in the St. Lawrence Estuary ArchiMer
Dupuy, Celie; Couillard, Catherine M.; Laroche, Jean; Nellis, Pierre; Brousseau, Pauline; Fournier, Michel.
A multibiomarker approach was developed on juvenile Atlantic tomcod (Microgadus tomcod) to evaluate the pertinence of this approach for low-cost screening assessment of the environmental quality of various coastal sites within estuaries. Several biometric indices and biomarkers (ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity, metallothionein concentration, and immune responses) were investigated on immature and maturing tomcods (a parts per thousand currency sign31 months) collected in four environmentally contrasted sites in the St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE). Simultaneous examination of various age classes provides the opportunity to detect short-term responses in sensitive young-of-the-year fish (e.g., EROD induction) and longer-time effects associated with...

A Nonlinear Offset Program to Reduce Nitrous Oxide Emissions Induced by Excessive Nitrogen Application AgEcon
Rosas, Francisco; Babcock, Bruce A.; Hayes, Dermot J..
On average, U.S. farmers choose to apply nitrogen fertilizer at a rate that exceeds the ex post agronomically optimal rate. The technology underlying the yield response to nitrogen rewards producers who over apply in years when rainfall is excessive. The overapplication of nutrients has negative environmental consequences because the nitrogen that is not taken up by the plant will typically volatilize causing N2O emissions, or leach causing water pollution. We present a nonlinear offset program that induces farmers to reduce their nitrogen applications to the level that will be consumed by the plant in a typical year and, as a result, reduce N2O emissions from agriculture. The offset program is nonlinear because of the nonlinear relationship between N2O...

A two-dimensional particle tracking model for pollution dispersion in A Coruna and Vigo Rias (NW Spain) ArchiMer
Gomez-gesteira, M; Montero, P; Prego, R; Taboada, Jj; Leitao, P; Ruiz-villarreal, M; Neves, R; Perez-villar, V.
A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled to a particle tracking model is applied to study the dispersion processes and residence time in two Galician rias (A Coruna and Vigo, NW Spain) under summer conditions. In A Coruna a long residence time was found in the harbour area due to the existence of a dock, and a short one in the river area. On the contrary, in Vigo, the residence time is smaller in the harbour area, due to the Rande Strait, beyond which the river effect is negligible.

A World for Reactive Phenotypes ArchiMer
Geoffroy, Benjamain; Alfonso, Sebastien; Sadoul, Bastien; Blumstein, Daniel T.
Humans currently occupy all continents and by doing so, modify the environment and create novel threats to many species; a phenomenon known as human-induced rapid environmental changes (HIREC). These growing anthropogenic disturbances represent major and relatively new environmental challenges for many animals, and invariably alter selection on traits adapted to previous environments. Those species that survive often have moved from their original habitat or modified their phenotype through plasticity or genetic evolution. Based on the most recent advances in this research area, we predict that wild individuals with highly plastic capacities, relatively high basal stress level, and that are generally shy—in other words, individuals displaying a reactive...

Acetylcholinesterase activity in copepods (Tigriopus brevicornis) from the Vilaine River estuary, France, as a biomarker of neurotoxic contaminants ArchiMer
Forget, Joelle; Beliaeff, Benoit; Bocquene, Gilles.
From April 1997 to June 1998, 14 measurements of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymatic activity were performed with the copepod, Tigriopus brevicornis, collected at five stations in the Vilaine River estuary (South Brittany, France). Simultaneously, four chemical analyses of triazines and one analysis of total pesticides in water were undertaken. AChE activity levels in T brevicornis were compared to the levels measured at a reference site not exposed to effluents from Vilaine River. Results reveal significant differences between AChE activity levels depending on location of stations in the plume of the river with an increasing gradient of activity from the upstream to the downstream stations, thus indicating that neurotoxic contaminants are mainly brought...

Action de l'acétate de tributyle-étain sur les oeufs et les larves D de deux mollusques d'intérêt commercial : Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) et Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lmk) ArchiMer
Robert, Rene; His, Edouard.
The Tributyl tin acetate, a component of certain antifouling paints, has deleterious effects on eggs and D shaped larvae from Crassostrea gigas at 5 p.p.b. (HIS & ROBERT, 1980). Here we have tested concentrations as low as 1 p.p.b. on eggs and on 24 hours old larvae both from Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis. The same results are got ; this product kills embryos and larvae in a few days ; it prevents growth of 24 hours old larvae exposed to this toxic. Mussels larvae seem to be less sensitive.

Active biomonitoring in Greek coastal waters: Application of the integrated biomarker response index in relation to contaminant levels in caged mussels ArchiMer
Tsangaris, Catherine; Hatzianestis, Ioannis; Catsiki, Vassiliki-angelique; Kormas, Konstantinos Ar; Strogyloudi, Evangelia; Neofitou, Christos; Andral, Bruno; Galgani, Francois.
An integrated approach using biomarkers and contaminant levels in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis L was employed to assess chemical contamination in Greek coastal waters within the framework of the MYTIMED program. Biomarkers (metallothioneins, glutathione S-transferase, catalase, acetylcholinesterase and RNA:DNA ratio) have been previously described in mussels caged at 14 sites in coastal areas influenced by different types of anthropogenic activities. This study applied a biomarker index, the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) to summarize biomarker responses and relate stress levels to concentrations of organochlorine compounds (PCBs, DDTs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals (Cu, Ni, Fe, Zn) measured in the mussel tissues. The IBR...

Air Pollution and Sea Pollution Seen from Space ArchiMer
Viatte, Camille; Clerbaux, Cathy; Maes, Christophe; Daniel, Pierre; Garello, René; Safieddine, Sarah; Ardhuin, Fabrice.
Air pollution and sea pollution are both impacting human health and all the natural environments on Earth. These complex interactions in the biosphere are becoming better known and understood. Major progress has been made in recent past years for understanding their societal and environmental impacts, thanks to remote sensors placed aboard satellites. This paper describes the state of the art of what is known about air pollution and focuses on specific aspects of marine pollution, which all benefit from the improved knowledge of the small-scale eddy field in the oceans. Examples of recent findings are shown, based on the global observing system (both remote and in situ) with standardized protocols for monitoring emerging environmental threats at the global...

Alterations on growth and gill morphology of Danio rerio (Pisces, Ciprinidae) exposed to the toxic sediments BABT
Fracácio,Renata; Verani,Nelsy Fenerich; Espíndola,Evaldo Luiz Gaeta; Rocha,Odete; Rigolin-Sá,Odila; Andrade,Cássio Arilson.
The objective of this work was to assess the toxicity of sediment samples from six cascade reservoirs in Tietê river system, in São Paulo State, Brazil, through chronic-partial toxicity bioassays with Danio rerio larvae as test-organisms. Histology of gills and biometric measurements were used to determine the existence of toxicity problems. The alterations on gill morphology here detected were considered of first stage (hyperplasia, lamellar junction and excess of mucous cells) in the first reservoirs and very slight in the last ones. The biometric analysis pointed to inadequate conditions for the growth of the test-organisms when exposed to the sediment of the rivers and upstream reservoirs and also indicated an improvement of environmental conditions...

Anthropogenic pressure on the open ocean: The growth of ship traffic revealed by altimeter data analysis ArchiMer
Tournadre, Jean.
Marine ecosystems are under increasing anthropogenic pressures from marine and terrestrial activities. Ship traffic, the major cause of change in the open ocean, and its temporal evolution are still largely unknown because of lack of data. Altimeter data provide a new powerful tool to detect and monitor the ship traffic through a method of analysis of echo waveform. The archive of seven altimeter missions has been processed to create a two decade database of ship locations. The estimated annual density maps compare well with the ones obtained from Automatic Identification System. The ship traffic analysis shows a global fourfold growth between 1992 and 2012, the largest increase being observed in the Indian Ocean and the Chinese seas reflecting the world...

Antioxidant capacity in relationship to serum lipid peroxides levels in healthy elderly of Mexico City ABCL
Sánchez-Rodríguez,Martha A.; Retana-Ugalde,Raquel; Ruiz-Ramos,Mirna; Mendoza-Núñez,Víctor Manuel.
The aging is one of the factors that cause decrease in the antioxidant capacity. Likewise, it has been proposed that subjects exposed permanently to air pollution develop deficient antioxidant capacity to oxidative stress (OxS). This study aimed to analyze the antioxidant capacity against elevated lipid peroxides in healthy elderly of Mexico City. 105 adults (44 ± 10.8 years) and 126 elderly subjects were studied (68 ± 7.1 years); residents of Mexico City (clinically healthy, non-smokers, non-vitamin supplement takers) who had lived in the city for >10 years. Plasma lipoperoxides (LPO), total antioxidant status (TAS), the activity of red blood cells superoxide dismutase (SOD), and plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPx), were studied in all subjects. LPO...

Are Agricultural Measures for Groundwater Protection Beneficial When Compared to Purification of Polluted Groundwater? AgEcon
Hasler, Berit; Lundhede, Thomas.
The groundwater resource, the drinking water areas and the surface water quality can be protected by measures, e.g. by reductions of pesticide and nutrient applications, conversion of arable land to grasslands or forests etc. The objective of the paper is to estimate the benefits of groundwater protection by the valuation method choice experiments. This method allows for separate estimation and comparison of the different attributes connected to groundwater protection i.e. the effects on drinking water and surface water quality as compared to the benefits from cleaning and treatment of polluted drinking water to make it suitable for drinking water consumption. The results indicate that the benefits are significant, and that the willingness to pay for...

Assessment of ecological risk to populations of aquatic invertebrates IBSS Repository
Tsytsugina, V. G..
On the base of experimental data and cytogenetic studies of marine and freshwater invertebrates natural populations it was shown that different species had approximately equal part (%) of full value posterity at the same average level of chromosome mutagenesis for populations, independing on deleterious factors and females fecundity. This phenomenon made it possible to calculate specimens reproductive contribution for species with different females fecundity and to assess expected reduction of population adaptive potential and the increase of ecological risk at different levels of population damage. It is suggested that the adaptation to pollution will be more effective in populations with high female fecundity.

Assessment of water quality in temperate-plain streams (Argentina, South America) using a multiple approach Ecología austral
Ocon,Carolina S.; Rodrigues Capítulo,Alberto.
We assessed the water quality in two pampean lotic systems (Argentina), the Juan Blanco and Buñirigo streams, subjected to different land uses (i.e., the UNESCO Biosphere Nature Reserve vs. industry and agriculture, respectively) through measurements of physicochemical data and the structural parameters of the macroinvertebrate assemblages in addition to ecotoxicological analyses. The objective was to identify the degree of ecological impairment in adversely affected areas and the consequent effects on the biota. The results obtained allowed the establishment of different water-quality classes within the study area. According to the indices applied, the downstream zone of the Buñirigo stream was categorized as moderately polluted on the basis of losses of...

Asymmetric Willingness-to-Pay Distributions for Livestock Manure AgEcon
Norwood, F. Bailey; Luter, Ryan L.; Massey, Raymond E..
The Environmental Protection Agency's new Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) regulations are forcing some farms to export livestock manure to off-farm acres. The regulation compliance cost depends on the willingness of neighboring crop producers to accept or pay for the manure. This study estimates a manure willingness-to-pay distribution for crop producers using a contingent valuation mail survey. A flexible parametric distribution is borrowed from the crop yield literature, which shows that manure willingness to pay is left-skewed. Most crop producers in our sample will pay a positive price close to the savings in commercial fertilizer, but approximately 25% require a payment before accepting manure.

Benthic foraminifera distribution in high polluted sediments from Niterói Harbor (Guanabara Bay), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Vilela,Claudia G.; Batista,Daniele S.; Batista-Neto,José A.; Crapez,Mirian; Mcallister,John J..
Dockyards and harbors are recognized as being important locations where sediment-associated pollutants can accumulate, which constitutes an environmental risk to aquatic life due to potential uptake and accumulation of heavy metals in the biota. The aim of this paper is to assess the concentrations and the effects of some heavy metals in the benthic foraminifera assemblage in Niterói Harbor. Low concentrations in the benthic foraminifera as well as the dominance of indicative species such as Ammonia tepida, Buliminella elegantissima and Bolivina lowmani can be associated with an environment under stress. In addition, the occurrence of test abnormalities among foraminifera may represent a useful biomarker for evaluating long-term environmental impacts in a...
